Best Vegan Spots in Puerto Escondido | Mexico

Flying into Puerto Escondido was so exciting as I could see palm trees and the Pacific ocean waves from the aeroplane. Stepping onto the runway was the hottest I have ever been in my life, definitely over 40°c and I was so happy to have arrived for our stay on the Mexican coast.

Pete and I were lucky to have enjoyed SO MUCH delicious vegan food whilst staying at One Love Hostel and Cielito Lindo Suites, the following list was some of our favourite spots to eat.

Alma Mia Deli

This one of our favourite spots to get our brunch fix. We went a couple of times whilst staying in the downtown Bacocho area and really liked chatting to the lovely owner. The food was fresh and tasty an included a variety of juices, smoothies, homemade bagels and oat bowls. I had the mango and strawberry oat bowl which was chia activated overnight oats made with coconut milk and topped with delicious fruits. The second trip, Pete and I shared bagels and split the pumpkin seed and avocado and the smoked carrot lox with cream ‘cheese’. I can’t stress how everything is homemade and the menu is so creative, it was hard to choose!

Chillicon Valley

This is a vegan food delivery service for the Puerto Escondido area and I’m not ashamed to say that we had the amazing burgers THREE times and they were probably the BEST vegan burgers I have ever had! Everything is homemade and totally delicious. The burgers are only available at the weekends and you have to preorder via whatsapp and they come with sweet potato fries and a side of beetroot hummus. I also ordered the Chocolate Brownie to have for dessert and it was super moist and a nice treat. It was so enjoyable eating our burgers and watching the sunset from the coolness of our balcony at Cielito Lindo Suites.

CocoFam

This tranquil spot is located in the heart of Puerto Escondido opposite the Bodega Aurrera. It’s a vegetarian cafe that serves tortas, tacos, vegan desserts and flavoured waters. I had the pink mushroom tacos which were some of the best I had in Mexico. They were super flavoursome and served in a really nice way and I also had the Chilate Cacao drink which was really refreshing.

No Mames Taco Stall

After wandering around Zicatela, we finally found No Mames tucked at the back of Espacio Cometa food market. This place is great as there’s loads of food stalls to choose from and a bar too. It was ladies night (lol) so I got a free shot of mezcal (I’m sorry but it was horrible…) and I had the USA loaded fries topped with Buffalo cauliflower. The food was tasty and good value for money. The food market was absolutely boiling so we didn’t stay too long but it had a nice vibe.

Pitaya

I stumbled across this place whilst I was waiting for a collectivo back to Zicatela. Craving a smoothie bowl, I ordered the Peanut Butter and Cacao bowl. You can choose your toppings too so I had granola, coconut shreds and extra PB. The seating area is small but you can order to takeaway and you can also rent surfboards for nearby Playa Carrizalilo.

$1 Vegan Taco Stand

This food stall only opens when the open mic night is on which is on a Thursday. It’s a good place to go for super cheap scran but we didn’t hang around the open mic too long because it was a bit like that hostel scene in The Inbetweeners 2 movie… you know the one. The tacos were filled with soya chunks and you could top them with as many toppings as you like – beware the chillis are VERY hot.
